Five a Day

I often see billboards and TV adverts telling me to eat 5 a day. But is it 5 fruits AND vegetables, 5 fruits OR vegetables or 10 altogether?

My take on the matter is, if in nearly every evening meal I use onion and garlic I'm already down two. Add a side of potatoes that makes three. For lunch I had a tomato and ham sandwich followed by a fruit yoghurt, I've already had my five a day intake.

But if it was a mixed fruit yoghurt am I up 4?

I’ll generally have an orange or a banana at some point during the day and I often use tomato purée and bell peppers in my dishes.

Am I therefore eating too many fruit and vegetables?

Anyone else confused?

What a great idea for a blog, and it's looking rather lovely too. Well done Charlotte! As far as I know.... it's 5 combined fruit and veg portions a day that is recommended. A portion is a handful - and for some reason potato doesn't count.....

I live in Hungary - here the ads are 3 fruits and veggies 3 times a day. I had the same debate, except is that 9 in various combinations or 9 of each? Figure had to be the first, the other seems extreme! So it might be five of each - would be healthy. I doubt I get that many, but I never thought about counting onions and garlic!
